Elden Ring Stutter Fix and Performance Guide for PC (2026)

Elden Ring on PC has a performance problem that a faster graphics card does not solve. The game is locked to 60 frames per second, so the goal is never a bigger number. The goal is 60 that stays at 60, without the small hitches that turn a perfectly timed dodge into a death.

Those hitches mostly come from shader compilation, traversal into new areas and background work on the PC, not from raw power. This guide covers the frame cap, why the game stutters, the settings worth changing, Easy Anti-Cheat and the honest limits of mods, Windows, the GPU driver and the network side of co-op and invasions. The 60-second fix is first.

The 60-second fix

  • Accept the 60 FPS cap and aim for a flat line. A steady 60 feels far better than a number that swings.
  • Lower Ray Tracing Quality to Off unless your graphics card has plenty of headroom.
  • Close the browser and overlays before playing; background spikes show up as hitches against a fixed 60.
  • Make sure the game is on an SSD. Riding into new areas loads data, and slow storage turns that into stutter.

Why Elden Ring stutters

Shader compilation

Elden Ring compiles shaders the first time it meets a new effect or area on your hardware. That compilation happens during play, so new bosses, spells and regions can hitch the first time you see them. It is worst after a driver update, when the cache starts over, and it improves as you play.

Traversal into new areas

Riding across the Lands Between loads new parts of the world. If the drive or CPU is busy, that loading shows up as a hitch, often on horseback where you notice it most.

A fixed frame rate shows every miss

At a locked 60, each frame has about 16.7 milliseconds. Anything that steals time from the game, from a background update to a browser tab, makes a frame miss that deadline, and at a fixed rate you notice every one.

In-game settings that actually matter

SettingRecommendedWhy
Ray Tracing QualityOff on most PCsA large cost for a subtle change.
Shadow QualityMedium or HighMaximum costs a lot for little gain.
Grass QualityMedium or HighOpen areas are full of it.
Global Illumination and Volumetric QualityMediumHeavy in fog and lit areas.
Motion BlurOffClearer reads on enemy attacks.
Screen ModeFull screen or borderless, whichever paces betterTest both; the steadier one wins.

Easy Anti-Cheat, mods and the frame cap

Elden Ring uses Easy Anti-Cheat for online play. Mods that remove the 60 FPS cap or change the game exist, but they require disabling Easy Anti-Cheat and playing offline, and using modified files online risks your account. We do not recommend them for anyone who plays online, and RIP Tweaks does not unlock the frame rate.

Changing Windows settings, drivers and background services is ordinary system configuration and a different thing from modifying the game. RIP Tweaks does not touch Elden Ring's memory or files. We do not claim any tool is invisible to an anti-cheat, because nobody can promise that honestly. More in is RIP Tweaks safe and will it get you banned.

Frame pacing at 60

Because the game is capped, how evenly frames arrive matters more than how many there are. Keep V-Sync behaviour consistent, avoid running other frame limiters on top of the game's own, and judge changes by frame times, not by the 60 in the corner. A variable refresh rate monitor (G-Sync or FreeSync) smooths small misses if you have one.

Windows is the real bottleneck

Elden Ring is locked to 60 FPS, so the goal is never a higher number: it is 60 that stays at 60, without the hitches that ruin a dodge.

  • Power plan and core parking. On a balanced plan the CPU drops its clocks and parks cores whenever it thinks it is idle, and waking them costs time at exactly the wrong moment.
  • Background apps. Launchers, overlays, RGB tools and updaters each wake up on their own schedule. One is nothing. Twenty of them are a stutter every few seconds.
  • Timer and scheduling. A coarse system timer makes the game wait longer for its turn, which shows up as uneven frame pacing rather than lower average FPS.
  • Storage. A nearly full drive slows every asset load, and that is felt as a hitch the first time something new appears.

All of it can be done by hand if you know which services are safe to touch and how to undo them. We wrote that route up in debloating Windows 10 and 11.

What RIP Tweaks does for Elden Ring

RIP Tweaks finds Elden Ring on its own when it is installed through Steam. If it is missing from the Games page, use Add Game and point it at eldenring.exe. Clicking the game opens a launch panel with two modes.

  • Balanced (free) quiets background apps and applies GPU Priority, I/O Priority and Purge RAM Cache before the game starts. It touches nothing risky.
  • Performance (Premium) adds Disable Segment Heap and Unbind CPU 0, which keeps the game off the processor core Windows uses most, and can close Explorer for the session. Your taskbar comes back when you stop.

Those settings are tied to eldenring.exe only, not to your whole PC, and you can untick any of them before you launch. With an NVIDIA card you can also apply the general high performance driver profile to Elden Ring from the same panel. There is no Elden Ring specific profile, and we would rather say so than pretend. The system wide tweaks for power, timers, network and input apply to every game, with a restore point created first.

What it does not do: it does not change Elden Ring's own settings, read the game's memory or touch its files. The in-game section above is still yours to set, and the Games page guide explains the rest.

GPU control panel

NVIDIA: set Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance for Elden Ring and leave Vertical Sync off. Elden Ring has no Reflex option, so Low Latency Mode set to On or Ultra is the setting that keeps the render queue short.

AMD: turn on Anti-Lag in the Adrenalin profile for the game, and leave Radeon Chill and Wait for Vertical Refresh off.

Then update the driver, and do it cleanly. A driver installed on top of years of older ones carries their leftovers with it, and a fresh driver also means Elden Ring rebuilds its shader cache, so expect the first match after an update to stutter once.

Co-op, invasions and the network

Co-op and invasions connect you directly to other players, so a poor connection on either side shows as rubber banding and hits that land late.

  • Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi for co-op and invasions.
  • Stop downloads and streaming on other devices while playing online.
  • If one co-op session lags badly, try another player before changing your PC.

More in how to lower ping in games.

Seeing whether any of it worked

Steam's built-in frame counter shows whether you hold 60, and the NVIDIA app or AMD Adrenalin overlay adds frame times, which is where Elden Ring's hitches show. Watch your 1% lows across a few matches before and after a change, not your average, and change one thing at a time.

For a proper recording, free tools such as PresentMon or CapFrameX log every frame and calculate the 1% and 0.1% lows for you. If a change did not move the lows, it did not help, however much the average went up.

The checklist

  • A steady 60, not a higher number
  • Ray tracing off, shadows and grass below maximum, motion blur off
  • Game on an SSD, browser and overlays closed
  • No extra frame limiters stacked on the game's own
  • High performance power plan, background apps closed
  • Driver clean installed, Prefer Maximum Performance for Elden Ring
  • Expect a few hitches in new areas after a driver update
  • Frame times checked while riding into new areas

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Elden Ring above 60 FPS?

Not without mods that require disabling Easy Anti-Cheat and playing offline. Online, the game is capped at 60, so aim for a steady 60.

Why does Elden Ring stutter in new areas?

Shader compilation and loading new parts of the world. It improves as you play, and an SSD and a quiet PC make it smaller.

Can tweaking Windows get me banned in Elden Ring?

Windows and driver settings are ordinary configuration and do not modify the game. RIP Tweaks does not touch the game's memory or files.

Does a faster graphics card fix Elden Ring stutter?

Often not, because the hitches come from shader compilation, loading and background work rather than raw power.
