Your Payment Was Declined

A declined payment is almost always your bank stopping the transaction rather than anything wrong with your card or with us.

Why it happens

Banks flag payments to merchants they have not seen before, particularly smaller software companies and particularly on cards belonging to younger customers. The payment never reaches us to accept or refuse.

What to try

1

Try again

A surprising share of declines succeed on a second attempt.
2

Try a different card, or use PayPal at checkout

3

Check your banking app for a security prompt waiting to be approved

4

If your bank has an option to allow the payment, use it and try once more

If the card belongs to a parent

Ask them to approve it in their banking app. Payments on someone else’s card are the most commonly stopped, and it is far better sorted before the payment than after.

Were you charged anyway

Sometimes a declined payment still shows as a pending amount. That is a hold, not a charge, and it disappears on its own. If a real charge appears with no access given, send us a message from the support bubble at the bottom right straight away.

Currency

Checkout supports several currencies. If your card is repeatedly refused in one, trying another sometimes goes through, because some banks treat foreign currency payments differently.

If nothing works

Send us a message from the support bubble at the bottom right. Tell us the date, the amount and the last four digits of the card. We can see whether the attempt reached us and what the reason was, which usually points straight at the answer.
